When the leaves start to change, NS gears up for Halloween. Our railroaders safely deliver all the essentials for your spooky season festivities — from trick-or-treater’s favorite candy to home décor.

Here are just a few of the things we move for our customers to deliver Halloween to you:

CANDY

The candy in your candy bowl that greets trick-or-treaters was likely transported on one of our trains. Last year alone, Norfolk Southern moved enough candy to fill the bags of over 44 million ghosts, witches, and superheroes.

NS also moves enough peanuts to make over 31 billion peanut butter cups!
 

In 2022 alone, we transported over 170,000 total tons of freight for household Halloween favorites from Hershey Chocolate Company and Mars Inc., including M&Ms, Snickers, and Skittles. 

COSTUMES

Picked out the perfect costume yet? Norfolk Southern transports enough cotton to make over 18 million costumes each year as well as enough cotton and denim combined to outfit over 29,000 of the season’s scariest scarecrows. 

PUMPKINS

Making your home Instagram-worthy with festive décor wouldn’t be possible without a delivery from Norfolk Southern. In the past year, we transported 23 tons of fresh pumpkins. With the average carving-sized pumpkin weighing in at 15 pounds, that’s close to 46,000 pounds of pumpkins ready to be featured on your doorstep. 

CARAMEL APPLES

The perfect Halloween treat for those who don’t want chocolate, NS moves enough apples and other ingredients to make over 4 million caramel apples each year.

To make your own batch of eight caramel apples from ingredients we move:

• Cook 1.75 cups of heavy cream, 1 cup of light corn syrup, 2 cups of brown sugar, 0.25 of cup butter, 0.5 teaspoon of salt and 0.5 teaspoon of vanilla extract on the stove until it reaches 235F.
• After removing the caramel from the heat, add vanilla and dip your apples.
• Your apples can be enjoyed immediately or after waiting for the caramel to set.
• Optional: Roll caramel apples in freshly chopped peanuts for an extra crunch!
