Norfolk Southern is educating the next generation of welders through an industry-leading program. Welders are highly sought after by employers, and graduates earn a transferable credential that allows them to work in a variety of industries nationwide. Participants include students from high schools, community colleges, and correctional facilities throughout Georgia and Tennessee.

Norfolk Southern’s McDonough Training Center operates the only testing center in Georgia that is accredited by the American Welding Society (AWS). The center is equipped with advanced, virtual welding machines. Our four Certified Welding Inspectors (CWIs) are authorized to administer the final AWS examination required for certification. Students who pass the examination receive a diploma and are considered AWS certified welders.

Approximately 150 students complete Norfolk Southern’s program annually. Student’s tuition is paid for in part by state and local workforce development or vocational education grants. Norfolk Southern offers scholarships to students as well.  

“There is a significant demand for certified welding talent nationwide,” said Brandon Gattie, Assistant Director of Technical Training, and a CWI. “We are helping students earn a highly marketable credential that they can use almost anywhere – including railroads like Norfolk Southern.”

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median salary for a welder is $47,000 a year. Over the next decade, the BLS projects there will be 47,000 openings for welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers each year. These professionals are essential to powering the American economy, including sectors like manufacturing, construction, aerospace, maritime, and petroleum.
