Enhancing our railroaders home away from home

Our dedicated team of Train and Engine employees travel throughout our 22-state network, delivering safe, reliable, and resilient service to our customers. Many spend nights away from their homes as part of their work. We’re taking additional steps to ensure our railroader’s comfort while on the road.

Collaboration has been key to our progress. We are working with local union leaders of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, and the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers – Transportation Division to identify hotel options that better meet the needs of our railroaders. Those options included hotels with 24-hour food service, quieter conditions, and modern amenities. NS has contracts with over 50 private sector hotels, and all have signed new agreements with NS.

“We’re working collaboratively with our labor partners so that our railroaders have the best possible stay while they are away from their home,” says Phil Bergman, Manager, Crew Transportation and Lodging. “Our railroaders provide outstanding service every day for our customers, and we are going to continue to find new ways to enhance their experience.”

NS also made investments in our company owned and rented lodging facilities that house up to 90 railroaders daily. Numerous upgrades to the facilities were recently completed, including new furniture and carpeting, along with stronger Wi-Fi.
