From farm to rail to your Thanksgiving table

It's not Thanksgiving without a table full of turkey, sides, casseroles, and treats. From America’s farms to your table, the rail industry delivers most of the ingredients used to make your favorite Thanksgiving dishes.

Here are just a few of the things we move for our customers to deliver Thanksgiving to your table:

SIDES

  • Corn: The corn-erstone of Thanksgiving feasts like cornbread and stuffing! Norfolk Southern moved more than 9 million tons of corn last year. That’s enough corn to serve on over 100 billion plates of Thanksgiving dinner or enough ears of corn to stretch around the world over 160 times.

  • Mashed potatoes: The perfect Thanksgiving side dish, Norfolk Southern transported enough potatoes to make mashed potatoes for the entire United States, three times over.

  • Sweet potato casserole: Prefer a side of sweet potatoes over the classic starch? We’ve got you covered. Last year, Norfolk Southern transported enough sweet potatoes to make over 650,000 sweet potato casseroles.

TURKEYS

In addition to delivering your feast essentials, Norfolk Southern transports the feed that likely anchors your Thanksgiving dinner. NS moves enough feed and grain each year to raise over 150 million turkeys. That’s enough to feed each household in America and still have about 25 million turkeys leftover.

TREATS

And last, but certainly not least…the dessert! An essential ingredient in every desert recipe, NS has moved over one million tons of sugar this year

Norfolk Southern transports enough corn syrup to be included in over 9 billion pecan pies and 6.4 billion dishes of candied yams.

From fertilizers nurturing the cornfields to the grains sustaining the turkeys, and all the ingredients to make all your favorite side dishes, our railroaders help to deliver your Thanksgiving meal.

As you gather around the table this Thanksgiving, remember that behind each dish lies a story of meticulous transportation, connecting America's farms to your home by rail. Thank you to our 20,000 railroaders who keep our goods rolling across our 22-state network.
