International Railway Journal names Colby Gardner to its 2024 Young Leaders in Rail list

Colby Gardner, AVP Operations, has been named to International Rail Journal’s Annual Young Leaders in Rail list for his outstanding leadership, service, and contributions to the rail industry. The list recognizes 12 rail executives under the age of 40 making valuable contributions to the global rail sector.

“Colby has a remarkable ability to lead with vision and purpose,” said John Orr, Chief Operating Officer. “His efforts to implement transformational initiatives and drive operational efficiency have been instrumental to our success, and we’re proud to see him receive this well-deserved recognition.”

Driving Operational Excellence

Colby has played a pivotal role in executing Norfolk Southern’s network operating plan, working closely with Orr to enhance service reliability, drive productivity improvements, and support sustainable growth. His leadership extends to solving critical industry challenges, including working with various NS leaders on blocked crossing initiatives in Chicago and Birmingham, Alabama. Collaborating with city leaders and utilizing grant funding, Colby has helped to address this persistent issue, ensuring safer and more efficient operations in the communities NS serves.

Fostering Community Impact

Colby’s passion for giving back extends beyond his professional achievements. A native of rural Georgia, he established a self-funded scholarship program for students in his hometown of Washington County, providing financial support to five college-bound students to date. He also mentors young athletes in metro Atlanta, drawing from his experience as a former Division I track athlete at the University of Georgia, and helps other collegiate athletes transition to professional careers.

At NS, Colby serves on the executive committee for the company’s Toys for Tots train and actively champions diversity as a sponsor of the Women in Operations Employee Resource Group. His advocacy has helped elevate the visibility and contributions of women across the organization.

“I am incredibly grateful to the International Rail Journal for including me,” said Colby. “This recognition is a reflection of the talented teams I’ve had the privilege to lead and the incredible support of my colleagues.”
