Norfolk Southern employees stocking the shelves during Hunger Action Month.
During National Hunger Action Month this September, Norfolk Southern committed $856,800 in grants to 32 organizations across 16 states to combat food insecurity through our Thriving Communities and Hampton Roads Community Foundation grant programs. These grants, along with our ongoing partnership with local food banks, will directly support efforts to ensure that children, families, and seniors have access to food during everyday challenges and times of crisis.
The organizations we support provide essential resources when communities need them most. Our contributions help ensure these organizations are well-equipped to respond to both the immediate and long-term needs of the communities they serve. This commitment has been critical in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton. We are proud that our support helped keep disaster response groups stocked in impacted states during this intense time of need.
"This partnership reflects Norfolk Southern’s commitment to supporting resilient communities," said Kristin Wong, Director of the NS Foundation and Community Impact. "By ensuring food banks are prepared, not just for everyday needs but also for times of crisis, we are investing in the well-being of our communities and providing critical support where it’s needed most."
Our commitment to addressing food insecurity this year extended beyond financial contributions. Norfolk Southern employees made a lasting impact through hands-on volunteer efforts. A month-long food drive at our Atlanta headquarters, 650 West Peachtree, benefited the Atlanta Community Food Bank, helping provide meals for Georgia families. Employees also volunteered at food banks in Alabama, Pennsylvania, and Indiana, collectively assisting nearly 1,000 families. Additionally, through a special 2:1 match campaign on the Thoroughbred Giving Portal, employees contributed an extra $3,000 to organizations supporting Hunger Action Month, further amplifying our impact.
Whether through donations, volunteering, or participating in food drives, Norfolk Southern employees are making a difference in the fight against food insecurity. Together, we are creating stronger, more resilient communities.
