The Program Maintenance R-2 rail gang working on the AS Line that runs from Asheville, NC to Newport, TN.
Norfolk Southern's Engineering team completed $1billion in infrastructure improvement projects in 2023. Throughout our 22-state network comprehensive improvements were made to safety infrastructure, tracks, bridges, and public crossings. This annual investment supports our commitment to delivering safe, reliable, and resilient service that customers can depend on.
These projects were accomplished through the hard work and dedication of our railroaders in Maintenance of Way & Structures, Program Maintenance, Communications and Signals, Design and Construction, and Bridges and Structures.
Here are just a few of the projects our Engineering team worked on in 2023 to ensure the safety and reliability of our network:
On the Great Lakes Division, a newly fabricated steel span of the Cuyahoga River Viaduct, also known as the Nickel Plate Bridge, is lowered into position by Bridges & Strctures forces.
One of 40 bridges replaced in 2023, crews replaced the bridge over North Court Street with a new ballast deck structure in Circleville, Ohio on the Blue Ridge Division.
On the Blue Ridge Division, a high rail crane removes a part of a rockslide. There was no other equipment or way to move this bolder from the track. With quick thinking and ingenuity, our railroaders chained the rock up and removed it.
Maintenance of Way and Communication and Signals crews worked together during a Hump Outage project at Brosnan Yard in Macon, Georgia.
The Gulf South Bridge and Track teams replaced a 120-year-old pin connected truss bridge.
Local Decatur, IL B&S forces completed a bridge tie deck installation on the Midwest Division. Over 32,000 bridge ties were installed last year.
Phase One of the Gallitzin Tunnel rehabilitation in Pennsylvania on the Keystone Division.
The R-3 gang works on the SC line around Columbia, SC. Pictured are spike pullers pulling spikes ahead of the Wide Gauge Threader taking out the old rail to be replaced. 619 track miles of rail work were completed, an 8% increase over 2022
