Norfolk Southern has been named to USA Today’s list of America’s Climate Leaders for 2023. The list includes companies across the United States that have achieved the greatest reduction in their core emissions intensity between 2019 and 2021. This prestigious award is presented by USA Today and Statista Inc., the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider.
“This recognition serves as a testament to Norfolk Southern's unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and the substantial progress we have made in reducing our Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions intensity,” said Josh Raglin, Chief Sustainability Officer for Norfolk Southern. “This progress would not be possible without the collective efforts and dedication of our team, customers, and partners who integrate innovation and sustainable practices into their daily operations. We are honored to be recognized as a climate leader, and we remain steadfast in our mission to build a better, more resilient planet for generations to come."
America’s Climate Leaders 2023 were selected based on a two-step process:
- Application and Research Phase: To be considered, companies had to meet specific criteria around reporting and publishing emissions data, revenue, CDP rating, and more. Statista scrutinized publicly available data on approximately 2,000 American companies.
- Data Analysis and Scoring Phase: For all companies meeting the inclusion criteria, the year-over-year reduction in emissions intensity (compound annual reduction rate) was calculated.
Norfolk Southern has established a science-based target to achieve a 42% reduction in scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 2034 from a 2019 base year. Rail is the safest, most sustainable way to move freight over land, and the company helps its customers avoid 15 million metric tons of carbon emissions each year. Norfolk Southern is committed to reducing its carbon footprint while helping its customers achieve their own sustainability goals, equipping them with innovative tools such as its next-generation carbon calculator and Rail Emissions Report to measure and mitigate supply chain emissions.
