Richard Atcheson
Bridges & Buildings Foreman
Macon, Georgia
Where did you start your career at NS and what do you do now?
I was hired as an apprentice for a bridge rebuild gang in 1983. I transferred to South Carolina and then back to Georgia, where I was promoted several times from apprentice, helper, mechanic, flag foreman, and then full foreman by 1989. Ten years later, I went into management as an assistant bridge supervisor. In 2003, I was promoted to full bridge supervisor in Greenville, South Carolina. In 2016, I went back to being a bridge inspector in the Coastal Division.
What’s the best advice you can give to other railroaders on working safely?
If you don’t know, don’t go. In other words, if you don’t know exactly which way to go with something, pause, and talk about the task with your co-workers. Be your brother and sister’s keeper.
What’s a typical day like for you?
Our team inspects culverts of varying sizes, along with bridges. We inspect for cracks or things potentially pulling apart to ensure that everything is structurally sound. We must constantly watch out for the elements, as well as nature. We deal with snakes, bees, and other insects.
I travel about a third of the time throughout the Coastal Division. My area covers most of Georgia, from the Chattahoochee River to Valdosta, along with all of NS’ territory in Florida. I enjoy my job and it has taken care of both my family and me.
What’s the best part of your job?
I really enjoy working with my team members. They are almost like family. I also enjoy being outside. You get to see the different areas of country other the main roads most people travel. I travel the back roads and get to see swamps and wildlife.
Why did you choose railroading as a career?
Railroading is part of my family. My dad worked for the Central of Georgia Railway. Growing up, I got to see what he did, and it grew my interest. My uncle also worked for the Central. This is interesting work and a lot of fun.
What do you like to do outside of work?
My wife and I like to hunt and fish together. I also enjoy playing Hot Wheels and blocks together with our two-year-old grandson.
