Norfolk Southern recently completed a siding extension project in Campbellstown, Ohio. Part of a strategy launched in 2017, the company is building longer, crossing-free sections of the railroad. This type of project is critical in high-density single-track segments where extended sidings allow trains to clear the main line while others pass.
Located on the New Castle District between Muncie and Cincinnati, this section sees as many as 25 trains per day. The upgrade extends the existing siding to 15,000 feet, which will better allow those trains to pass, improving fluidity on the company’s network.
“This siding extension project represents Norfolk Southern’s commitment to improving safety, service and efficiency,” said Ed Boyle, Norfolk Southern Vice President of Engineering. “The extension enables us to better serve our customers and support businesses in the area and beyond. Importantly, it also eliminates the chances of a blocked crossing in the community, which creates a safer and more accessible environment for residents.”
The community will benefit from the closure of three crossings in Preble County -- Conley Road and Daily Road. Norfolk Southern will assist with upgrading Toby Road to serve as an alternate route for north-south traffic. Once upgrades are complete on Toby Road, the crossing at Oxford-Gettysburg Road will close in late 2024.
Making progress on the overall strategy and the company’s annual investment in infrastructure, similar projects were recently completed in Montpelier, Ind., and Sidney, Ind.
The Campbellstown siding extension project is part of Norfolk Southern’s $1 billion annual investment in its infrastructure, which ensures safe and efficient delivery of freight to customers throughout our 22-state network.
