Applications open for Safety First and Thriving Communities grant programs

Norfolk Southern is now accepting applications for its Safety First and Thriving Communities grant programs through October 1. Launched in 2023, these programs are designed to support organizations that promote safe and sustainable operations, develop the local workforce, and build strong, resilient communities across our 22-state network.

The Safety First grant program supports organizations and initiatives that directly provide safety services or operate programs that promote safe behavior. Grants of up to $15,000 will assist first responders and organizations working to prevent and prepare for emergencies, ensuring community safety.

Examples of initiatives that would qualify for a Safety First grant:

  • Education and Awareness: Programs that prevent accidents and encourage safe behavior.
  • Response Readiness: Programs and equipment that enable first responders to effectively respond to events and emergencies.
  • Mitigation of Criminal Activities: Programs addressing core issues leading to criminal activities and providing effective response mechanisms.
  • Disaster Relief: Programs and organizations responding to natural disasters and other community emergencies.

The Thriving Communities grant program promotes economic opportunity, supports vibrant community life, and provide equal access to basic necessities. Grants of up to $50,000 will support nonprofit organizations working to build a strong foundation for long-term prosperity in our communities.

Examples of initiatives that would qualify for a Thriving Communities grant:

  • Basic Life Necessities: Programs that prevent or support those in financial need and provide long-term recovery assistance.
  • Well-Being Support: Programs that assist those with mental health and substance abuse issues, as well as those suffering from domestic abuse.
  • Preservation of Local Culture: Programs that strengthen community identity and preserve historical elements.
  • Enhance Community Spaces: Programs that beautify neighborhoods and improve shared spaces, increasing livability, promoting commerce, and attracting more residents and businesses.
